Consultation Process

This is an essential step towards improving quality of your life. The objective of the appointment is to measure your hearing thresholds, and determine what impact your hearing loss has on your social, professional and personal lifestyle.

The first step is inspecting your outer ear, the ear canal and the ear drum for signs of infections, ear wax, perforation etc. This is followed by an examination of the middle ear system using tympanometry. Tympanometry is used to determine presence of fluid or infection in the middle ear space, and to evaluate the function of the eustachian tube. The actual hearing test consists of two parts, the first part is to evaluate the softest level at which you can hear through a range of 250Hz and 8000Hz and determine if the hearing loss is conductive, mixed or sensorineural in nature.

The second part evaluates how well you are able to understand and discriminate words in quiet and in noisy situations. It is possible that the hearing loss is associated with medical problems, in such cases you will be referred to an ear nose and throat physician for medical management.  If the hearing test results indicate hearing aid candidacy then our will guide you through the process of hearing aid selection based on your hearing goals, lifestyle goals and budget. We recommend that you bring a friend or a family member to the appointment.
